Artist Statement

My work is to addresses the idea of place, how we inhabit and utilize our space in the world. Closely observing the constructed landscape, urban and suburban environments, I began questioning commonly held assumptions about property, and home, as well as our perceptions of its’ boundaries. Using actual places and environments as images, I am examining the perception of man-made walls, defining space, their purpose and consequences. I do not want to romanticize or critique this subject, but to use common or overlooked elements of our society’s landscape and make them appear worthy of closer attention. The visible and invisible barriers we erect to define our space are illusions of safety with the objective to hide, protect, enclose, isolate, and exclude. Beneath the surface of our daily lives are layers of illusions. Through subtle transparencies, our existence within this small sheltered world is fragile and inhabitants are terribly alone. We are vulnerable – when we feel the most protected.
